Week 12: Climate Change

  1. What did you do in lab today? In lab, we first went over our exam from last week, looking at the questions and talking about the curve. Then, we talked about the Weather Apps assignment, what we learned, and what was hard. We also worked on the Before the Flood assignment, answering questions with our group and the class. We reviewed the difference between weather and climate and the water cycle. After that, we did a research activity about different parts of Iowa. My group did research on Ames, Boone, and Fort Dodge and how rainfall has changed over time.

  2. Primary points in the video: The video shows that climate change is real and caused mostly by human activities, like burning fossil fuels and cutting down forests. It explains how these actions are raising temperatures, melting ice, and harming wildlife. The video also shares solutions and emphasizes that everyone needs to take action to protect the planet.
  3. Major issues: The major issues include rising global temperatures, extreme weather events like floods and droughts, and the loss of habitats for animals. Melting ice caps are causing sea levels to rise, which can affect people and communities around the world. These problems show how urgent it is to address climate change.
  4. Questions you want us to teach you: I want to learn how climate change affects people and animals directly. I also want to understand what small changes I can make in my daily life that really help the environment.
  5.  If you were a teacher, how you would like us to teach you: I would like learning to include videos and real-life examples to make the topic easier to understand. Group discussions and activities would help me think about solutions.
  6. What was the big question? Is the goldfinch, Iowa’s state bird, in danger?
  7. What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion? I learned the difference between weather and climate and how climate is measured over a long period of time. We talked about the factors that affect climate, like latitude, ocean currents, wind, elevation, mountains, and being near water. We also learned how Iowa’s climate is changing, with more extreme rainfall events that can affect crops and water quality.Links to an external site.
  1. What did you learn? I learned that climate change is real and mostly caused by people, like by burning fuel and cutting down trees. I also learned what affects climate, like how high a place is, how close it is to the equator or water, and ocean currents. I learned that climate change is happening in Iowa, with more rain, hotter temperatures, and effects on crops and animals. People can do things to help the environment.
  2. What was most helpful? The most helpful thing was learning the difference between weather and climate. It also helped to see how climate change is affecting Iowa, like more rain, hotter temperatures, and changes to crops and animals. Watching Before the Flood and seeing real examples made it easier to understand why taking action is important.
  3. What do you need more information on? I need more information on what people can do to stop or slow down climate change. I also want to learn more about how climate change affects animals, plants, and farms in Iowa and other places.

5. What questions, concerns, and/or comments do you have? Nothing right now.
